General Notes (Wife)
By: Gregory "Greg" Armstrong
Mary was a great women in all rights and I loved her dearly. On the day that Mary died I called to see how she was doing. In as much as she was very ill and could not talk very well on the telephone she did say to me; "always be there for our daughter" and I have been and always will be there for her.
She loved everyone she came in contact with and they could feel the loving power she had. To me, she had a great loving power that was sent by God.
Mary was the oldest in a large family and always said "I'm going on a boat the the USA and when I make it good I'll have you all over, and she did. Now her daughter, Theresa is doing the same.

General Notes (Husband)
My Dad: by Gregory Armstrong
My father graduated Business School in Port Huron, Michigan and joined the Army in about 1939. He served on both fronts during World War II. He joined the Army as a private, worked up through the ranks and came out of the service as a Captain. He served under General Patton and was in Patton’s unit at the time of the “Battle of the Bulge” During his Army service he won many medals for bravery.
I did not see my dad until his return after the war in 1945. When he did come home he brought with him his Army training, so that I had a Captain for a dad (which I needed). His war years had a great effect on him. No-one ever could verbally out smart or fool my dad, he could go up one side of you and down the other with just words. Everyone fully respected him. One of his friends told me “I never met a man like that in my life”.
A Short History of the Store:
The store at 915 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie opened in 1886 by William J Armstrong, son of David Armstrong who was the second son of Rainey Armstrong.
My grandfather, W. J. sold everything, groceries, pickles, buggy whips – a general store to be sure. In about the 1930s he got into selling construction equipment, bulldozers, tractors, cultivators and so-on. It was during this time that his son Clifford came to work for him.
In the 1940s they started selling mostly farm equipment. At that time there were a lot of farmers in the Sault Ste. Marie area. Clifford’s son, Robert, started working part-time after school and worked there until he graduated from Houghton Tech. as an engineer.
After World War II my dad started at the store and sold farm equipment for his brother Clifford. Dad and Clifford worked for many years together in the business. After Clifford died my dad took over the business. I think the last big tractors were sold in about 1960 when the government’s “Soil Bank” plan came in to being, and the farmers were paid - not to farm. Our connection to the McCarthy family, who owned a logging and saw mill industry South of Sault Ste. Marie, was a definite influence on my father’s decision to branch into smaller equipment. The business soon involved chainsaws, logging supplies and service. We have been in the smaller equipment business ever since.
I started helping dad (no pay) in the late 1950s as part-time until he retired, then I took over. I was working at Algoma Steel and my job came to an end just about the time dad wanted to get out and retire. Over the years the store has had three names. First it was Armstrong’s then Armstrong’s Supply and now Armstrong’s Power Equipment. We were given the Historical Award by the Governor of Michigan in 2004. The store is still going but the “Soup is getting thin” I think the end is near.
By Gregory Armstrong (present owner of Armstrong’s Power Equipment)
General Notes (Wife)
My Mother: by Gregory Armstrong
My mother, a very refined lady was a registered nurse. She did not much like the rough lumberjacks who came to the store. Mother always missed her family who were living in North Bay Ontario.
Mother was ill during the last 15 years of her life and devoted herself to her family. Her family, the Quinn’s, have been my backbone all my life.

General Notes (Husband)
As told by John Broadfoot:
"Harold went by the nickname 'Irish'. - There was no one in the area that could plow a straighter furrow than Harold Armstrong. His Dad Wilson, was also very good at plowing a straight furrow".
As told by a nephew, Brian Armstrong:
"Harold was a very creative individual. He could do wonderful work of decorating the interior of the house. He one time took to papering the large livingroom and because of his intensity to any job like this, he worked continually for most of two days without stopping. He was known to work so diligently at a task such as this, that he would work right through, from start to finish, not even stopping at meal time."
