General Notes (Husband)
Obituary:
Bay City Times, Bay City, Michigan - July 30, 1915
After an illness if eight months, William Armstrong of 232 North Madison Avenue, died at his home last night at the age of 65 years.
Mr. Armstrong was born in Ireland and came to Canada with his parents when a child. In 1867 he went to Minnesota and then to Missouri, where he married. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong moved to Bay City and have made this city their permanent home.
Surviving Mr. Armstrong are his wife and two children, W. W. Armstrong and Mrs. J. H. Butterfield.
Recollections of stories handed down in the family by a great-granddaughter, Jean (Tracy) Dembeck:
William was a heavy drinker and was abusive when drunk. Daughter Eva would go downtown in Bay City near the river front to the saloons begging her father to come home. Eva often jumped into fights between her parents trying to help her mother. As a result, Eva became quite religious and active in the Baptist Church.

Recollections by a granddaughter, Jean (Tracy) Dembeck:
"Eva believed men were rotten and wanted only one thing. She did her best to teach her daughters this. That is why Gertrude and Marion did not marry. Florence, however, was a bit of a rebel and did marry."
In Eva's Bible there was a poem:
Father dear father,
come home with me now......
It had to do with her father's drinking.
General Notes for Child William W ARMSTRONG
William W. Armstrong was the second child born to William and Rebecca (Laing) Armstrong. He was born about 1875 in the State of Missouri while his parents lived there.
From the 1880 U.S. Census we find him living with his father, mother and sister in Bay City, Michigan, his age is listed as 5 years on the 1880 Census. Again he is found on the 1894 Michigan State Census living in Bay City with his father, mother and sister; his age is now listed as 19.
It appears William left home and the Bay City area between 1894 and the time of the 1900 U.S. Census, as on this Census only his father and mother are listed. He can not be found on the Bay City area Census. William’s Sister Eva, was married in 1995 and is therefore not found with her father and mother in 1900.
William is mentioned as a living son in the obituary for his father who died in 1915. He would have been about 40 years of age in 1915. Again he is mentioned as a living son in the obituary for his mother who died in 1932. He then would have been about 57 in 1932.
A grandniece, Jean (Tracy) Dembeck recalls family stories that indicate William left home at an early age and never did come back to the Bay City area. The family story was told, that William went out West.
It is unfortunate, but more work is yet to be done on the life of William.

Uncle William didn't like having his picture taken. He had a fifty acre farm on the Bronson Line I believe, but he wasn't much of a farmer. We picked cherries on his farm once. He was an excellent butcher and was much in demand in the fall by their neighbors when they did their butchering.

General Notes (Husband)
W. J. was into just about everything at the store that he started, selling, trading, bartering etc. It is told that one afternoon a man came by the Armstrong store with an Ox and W. J. said "tie the Ox up to the shed out back and come in the store and we will talk" After about 15 minutes another person came in the store and said "your shed is going down the street" A true story - so they say.

General Notes for Child Harold Gregory "Army" ARMSTRONG
My Dad: by Gregory Armstrong
My father graduated Business School in Port Huron, Michigan and joined the Army in about 1939. He served on both fronts during World War II. He joined the Army as a private, worked up through the ranks and came out of the service as a Captain. He served under General Patton and was in Patton’s unit at the time of the “Battle of the Bulge” During his Army service he won many medals for bravery.
I did not see my dad until his return after the war in 1945. When he did come home he brought with him his Army training, so that I had a Captain for a dad (which I needed). His war years had a great effect on him. No-one ever could verbally out smart or fool my dad, he could go up one side of you and down the other with just words. Everyone fully respected him. One of his friends told me “I never met a man like that in my life”.
A Short History of the Store:
The store at 915 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie opened in 1886 by William J Armstrong, son of David Armstrong who was the second son of Rainey Armstrong.
My grandfather, W. J. sold everything, groceries, pickles, buggy whips – a general store to be sure. In about the 1930s he got into selling construction equipment, bulldozers, tractors, cultivators and so-on. It was during this time that his son Clifford came to work for him.
In the 1940s they started selling mostly farm equipment. At that time there were a lot of farmers in the Sault Ste. Marie area. Clifford’s son, Robert, started working part-time after school and worked there until he graduated from Houghton Tech. as an engineer.
After World War II my dad started at the store and sold farm equipment for his brother Clifford. Dad and Clifford worked for many years together in the business. After Clifford died my dad took over the business. I think the last big tractors were sold in about 1960 when the government’s “Soil Bank” plan came in to being, and the farmers were paid - not to farm. Our connection to the McCarthy family, who owned a logging and saw mill industry South of Sault Ste. Marie, was a definite influence on my father’s decision to branch into smaller equipment. The business soon involved chainsaws, logging supplies and service. We have been in the smaller equipment business ever since.
I started helping dad (no pay) in the late 1950s as part-time until he retired, then I took over. I was working at Algoma Steel and my job came to an end just about the time dad wanted to get out and retire. Over the years the store has had three names. First it was Armstrong’s then Armstrong’s Supply and now Armstrong’s Power Equipment. We were given the Historical Award by the Governor of Michigan in 2004. The store is still going but the “Soup is getting thin” I think the end is near.
