General Notes (Wife)
Shirley Armstrong - by her son Kevin
Mum was an amazing woman. She was caring, compassionate and benevolent. As a child I would arrive home from school knowing she would always be there at the door to welcome me home with a hug and genuine inquiries into how my day had gone. I never once felt anything from her but unconditional love and unquestioning acceptance of me as a person.
While she was the best mother a son could ever be blessed enough to have, she was, and is an inspiration to me. To this day I have vivid memories of the grace with which she suffered terrible and protracted medical problems in the last decade of her too short life. Despite her pain and fear Mum would always find a smile and words of thanks for the countless healthcare providers she encountered. Among her almost endless medical problems it was extremely difficult for nurses and doctors to find a vein when attempting to draw blood or start an IV. Despite the pain of repeated attempts Mum would feel bad for the nurse! She would sense that person’s anxiety and frustration, apologizing to them and trying to help them feel better.
As I reflect on Mum from this place in my life I recognize just how strong and courageous a person she was. Despite her fears and self-doubt she made herself emotionally available to everyone around her and faced the frailty of life with an unwavering capacity to see the good in others.
I sincerely believe that the world was made a better place because Mum’s presence in it.

Shirley Armstrong - by her daughter Maureen
On rare occasions in our life, we cross paths with someone unforgettable. What makes them so may be their physical appearance or their personal achievements. Or perhaps something quirky such as a particularly way of speaking. Mom was unforgettable, not for any of those things but for her ability to weave immense faith, hope, laughter and love into life.
Here was a woman who, through sheer force of will, overcame self-doubt and fear at several important points in her life. There were many challenges along the way - learning to drive a car, taking on more challenging work, obtaining her high school diploma as an adult, battling the ravaging effects of stroke. To some, these may not seem like big obstacles. But to Mom, who saw herself as a skinny frightened poor kid who grew up with the constant threat of losing her own mother to illness, they were monumental. While she frequently told us she couldn’t do this or wasn’t any good at that, she quietly went about proving herself wrong. Even when it looked like she really couldn’t pull something off, she managed to come up with the energy and inner strength to keep tackling it and would eventually push herself to victory. You couldn’t help but cheer her on.
Her spirit was infectious. She could light up a room with her thousand watt smile and quick wit. Everyone wanted to be close to her. I didn’t always appreciate what great seats I had at this theatre of life which she performed everyday, while we had her. Like so many unforgettable people, she passed too quickly and left us wanting more. But I still feel her presence. She is still with me, guiding me and passing on her words of faith, hope, laughter and love.

Shirley Joyce (South) Armstrong (a biography by her husband)
Shirley was born at Verdun, Quebec on January 28. 1935. She was born in the family home of her parents, Sidney and Elizabeth (Anderson) South. She was the fourth of five children in the family. Her older brother and older sister were born in Montreal while an older sister and Shirley were born in Verdun. The last of the five children in the family was born at Trois Rivieres, Quebec.
Early in WW11, Shirley’s father joined the Canadian Army and was stationed in Trois Rivieres, Québec for a time. The family moved to Woodstock in 1942 when the Army transferred her father there. It was a full house for the South family, as Shirley’s mother’s sister Isabella and her daughter Barbara came to live with the family as Isabella’s husband Ross was in the navy. It meant that Shirley grew up being very close to her cousin; Barbara. There was only about three year’s difference in their ages. Shirley’s older sister Marjorie, who was seven years older than herself was often the one to entertain and look after the younger children.
The family was poor and had to find any means possible to help out. One thing that was done to help provide fuel for heating and cooking was to go along the railway tracks and pick up any coal that had been dropped off the trains. With a large number of persons living in small accommodation, it was not uncommon for several persons to share the same bed. For a time, one of the family’s rented homes was located right beside the railway tracks. Being a rather poorly constructed house, it was always frightening to young children to be in the house when the rain rumbled by. In later years when watching one of her favorite entertainers, Dolly Parton, sing songs and tell stories about her poor family and growing up years in the hills of Kentucky, Shirley could relate to her stories and songs, because they brought back memories of her own childhood.
Shirley got all her formal education in Woodstock, and left school after completing grade nine at Woodstock Collegiate Institute. The early departure from school was for one reason only, that was to help the family out financially.
Her work experience began even before she left school by working in department stores. After leaving school she worked at the knitting factory of Harvey Woods in Woodstock. Then went to work as a venetian blind assembler at Kirsch & Company, working there until after her marriage and becoming pregnant with her first child. To her, her most important work was that of a mother and homemaker. It was not until after her children were grown-up that she did start back to work. First, she did part-time work at the post office during the busy Christmas season. Shirley then went on to work in jewelry retail sales, the kind of work that a person as out-going and friendly as she was could really shine at. She first worked for a number of years at Jack Eaid’s Jewelry and then until her illness at Vanthuyne Jewelers.
Shirley was a very friendly, outgoing individual that could make conversation with anyone. She had the ability to make people feel important, feel wanted, and in no time, people would be talking about themselves. She was an excellent listener and would pick-up quickly on how a person was feeling. She had a special attraction for children as well, children would always want to come close to her and feel comfortable with her, to involve them in play and in conversation. She had many, many friends and as she searched for a deeper meaning to life, she turned to her friends who were holding regular Bible study every Tuesday morning over coffee. Through these study sessions, she developed a deep faith in God while gaining a thorough knowledge of the Holy Bible. Shirley became a strong Christian and worked hard to help spread the word of God to many others.
Over the years as her husband found himself very involved with his work, often arriving home late for meals, Shirley was always there and would keep dinner for him after herself having had dinner with the children. She was a tolerant woman, always there for her family preparing wonderful dinners. The roast beef dinners including those wonderful Yorkshires and grave on Sundays was a real treat.
Shirley was a beautiful person, both on the inside and outside. She was a gracious looking lady that always prided herself in her person appearance. Working hard at exercise and calorie intake, she maintained her weight and body shape at all times. She was always found to be well groomed and well attired for the occasion. She worked hard on her own to keep herself well groomed and went often to the hair dresser for assistance in keeping her hair, hands and skin looking youthful. Her taste in clothing was excellent, and did not find a need to spend a lot of money on clothing as her choices were very well considered. Choosing well made cloths and having a natural ability to combine colors that allowed her to combine various pieces to make different looking outfits.
Dinning out was a pleasure for Shirley that was done from time to time. It was not important to her that a classy place was chosen as long as it was clean a provided good service. One of her favorite restaurants was the Swiss Chalet that did serve good meals as well as provide good service.
Shirley had a special thing with music, she played the piano and organ somewhat, but playing musical instrument was not the big thing with her. Her repertoire of songs was unbelievable. She could recall the titles and words to an endless number of songs. It was interesting, when at organ club that was held in various homes, a game would be played between Shirley and others. The game was; someone would play a tune on the piano or organ and see just how quickly Shirley could give the name of the tune and in many cases sing most of the words. It was not often anyone could come up with the song that would stump her. She had a nice singing voice that was enjoyed by everyone who heard her sing. The family would often be entertained by her singing around the home, and in the car. When asked about her musical ability and the knowledge of so many songs; her answer was, “she had heard her father play and sing all those songs”, and he was a very talented musician playing several instruments.
Shirley’s health had been good, with only the usual problems until the late spring of 1985 when she began to suffer angina pain. Tests done indicated she should have angioplasty done at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. The procedure was scheduled to be done one day in August, and even on the trip to London she asked “I wonder why I am going to go through this, I feel well right now.” Things went very wrong for her that day and Doctors had to do emergency open heart surgery that evening. Because of the heart damage done she was very poorly for ten days and then suffered a severe stroke in hospital. After nine months in hospital she came home and worked hard every day to come back to her usual self. She did well but never fully recovered, then in November, 1990 while in Florida she suffered another bad stroke. Upon returning home to Ontario she again worked hard to recover but never again the ability to walk on her own. She was still able to transfer to and from the car and made several more trips to Florida.
Then in late August 1996 her heart was failing and she again was admitted to hospital where she died of a heat attack on September 6.
